Capricorns reflect what I think is great about bicycles, bicycling, building frames, and the classic media of steel, brass, and silver.
Each frame, fork, and rack is a hand-built piece from me to you, made to the best of my abilities. My goal is to build a bicycle
that you’ll want to ride everyday: the frame providing the armature of that machine, a construction in which no detail goes
unnoticed.

I began building bicycles in the 90′s with Waterford Precision Cycles where I learned the trade from some of the most practiced
builders in the business. From there I moved to Minneapolis for school, and after a 2000-mile ride to Seattle decided to take
up frame building again. Capricorn Bicycles became the culmination of my experience with bicycles and my desire to do work
and be creative by hand.

I now live in Eugene, Oregon to find new roads and trails to explore, and to live someplace for a change with a somewhat mellow
climate.

Diane has been running the show for about a year and has had a great string of guests so far.

On the show we discussed a fairly wide range of topics, most specifically the OBCA and how we work to promote the Oregon frame builder, this years Oregon Handmade Bicycle Show and how Oregon is becoming a hot bed for cycling and bicycle building. We also discussed Winter Bicycles and the work I do to provide my customers with bikes specifically tailored to their bodies and their riding needs.

My very close friend Jeff Bates has a terrible case of skin cancer. Some friends and I put together a drawing for a custom Pereira SS 29er. The bike is complete with top-shelf components donated by our friends at Chris King, Enve, Shimano, Continental and SRAM. Winner also gets round trip airfare to Portland (from anywhere in the conti US) to meet with me for design consult, two dinners at great local restaurants (including Screen Door) and hotel accommodations. I’m wondering if you all can help me get the word out. Maybe on your blog? On your twitter or facebook page? Money raised will go to Jeff and his family to help take care of medical costs and reduce stress so that he can heal. More info here:

jeffbatesmf.org/?q=node/45

I met Jeff working at Wild Rose bike shop in Salt Lake City. We have been riding buddies for years–he absolutely rips on a mountain bike. Jeff helped me get my business started, riding and racing the 2nd (and 23rd and 83rd) bikes that I built, encouraging me to pursue my passion and live my dream. He also introduced me to the woman who is now my wife. Jeff is the best kind of people you would ever want to know and deserves our help. Please do whatever you can to spread the word.

WELCOME EVERYBODY
Terra Nova Cycles, LLC (Strawberry Cycles Engineering & Fabrication)
Year Founded: 1971
Owner: Andy Newlands
Shop visits possible: Yes
Retail sales at shop: Yes

Shop description:
Goose Hollow, an 1845 neighborhood in southwest Portland is the location of the Strawberry bicycle frame fabrication facility since 2002. The company founded in Portland in 1971, has the goal of producing handcrafted bicycle frames and tube processing tooling and equipment. The unique frame designs and an absolute personal (one man – two dog) working method assure a style steeped in elegance, if you will, that found its sublime “promised land” in Goose Hollow.

Dedicated, passionate design work, but low-keyed and always sensitive to the human side of every equation in the bicycle framebuilding craft, Strawberry incarnated a distinctive way of thinking and working in the very concrete terms of bicycle frame fabrication. Trained in engineering with over forty years of machining and oxy/propane brazing experience, Strawberry has a conception of bicycle framebuilding which springs from skills learned over time but is neither artificial nor intellectualistic, rather one that is striking for the depth of consideration behind it as well as for the simplicity of its operation.

Strawberry trademarked frames are completely hand built in the Goose Hollow shop from Reynolds steel tubing and investment cast lugs and are designed for road sport/racing, track racing and city/commuting. The oxy/propane brass brazed lugged steel framesets feature hand-cut lug work, Strawberry designed investment cast wishbone and integrated topstay/seatpost binder. The company is also the US sales agent for Marchetti SRL, Bergamo, Italy which engineers and manufactures testing equipment, wheelbuilding machines, tube processing machinery, welding fixtures/robots, frame and fork alignment tools as well as turnkey engineering.

In 2010, the Oregon Handmade Bicycle Show included 40 builders and welcomed over 2,500 attendees for the two day event. The 2011 show promises to again feature the country’s finest bicycles and related artisanal bicycle products. This year, the show is excited to be accepting the invitation to be a part of the 2011 Day of the Dead Cyclocross Festival in Bend, Oregon. Halloween Cross Crusade is a huge weekend of festivities including cyclocross races on Saturday & Sunday which welcome over 1,000 racers from throughout the Pacific Northwest.

“OBCA is very excited about the opportunity to bring the Oregon Handmade Bike Show to Bend,” said David Levy, President of the OBCA. “This is a great opportunity to showcase the talents of Oregon’s bicycle builders in a new region of the state and we’re confident our partnership with Visit Bend and the Cyclocross Crusade will increase the attendance of our biggest fundraiser of the year.”

“Visit Bend is honored and thrilled to host the Oregon Handmade Bike Show,” said Doug La Placa, President of Visit Bend. “In conjunction with the Halloween Cross Crusades, Bend will be hosting two of the largest and most prestigious cycling events in the Pacific Northwest over the Halloween weekend. The events will provide a timely boost to Bend’s tourism industry and will be a ton of fun for the local community.”

The 2011 OR Handmade Bicycle Show will include the two-day frame builder exhibition, plus seminars, local entertainment and socializing.

The PedalNation bicycle show was good fun and great exposure for our members. For the second year in a row the OBCA was fortunate enough to showcase examples of Oregon frame craft to an enthusiastic Portland audience. Ahearne Cycles was showing his popular cycle truck, Ceilo Cycles had a couple of TIG welded offerings, English Cycles displayed his take on a feathery looking 29′er, Millholland Cycles was represented by Greg Morris and classic styled road and mountain designs, Metrofiets and Joe Bike had examples of their individual takes on cargo bikes with Phil giving rides to all takers on his demo Metrofiets. Rolf Prima was present with their line of amazing wheels, Wade from Vulture Cycles showed his elegant city bike(and tall bike …as always!), Ti Cycles rounded out the group with a number of titanium bikes, fresh from the NAHBS show in Austin. A few beers we shared, stories swapped and in the end, a Gold Sprints showdown, hard fought between Millholland, Vulture, Rolf Prima and Ti Cycles. As sometimes happens, youth triumphed and young Greg Morris took the honors for Millholland Cycles, Brooke from Rolf Prima has already started training to crush all comers next year!

Thanks to Aaron for the great show and support, keep cycling and see you next year!
