OBCA VP and Winter Bicycles builder, Eric Estlund, is headed to this year’s Bespoked:Bristol show. In addition to showing his bikes, Eric will be representing the OBCA and leading a discussion on independent frame building in the US. See you in Bristol!
Portland based designer and machinist, Spencer Houser, recently provided three dimensional CAD services to Strawberry Bicycle for the design of a new bicycle fork crown. Andy Newlands, owner/builder of Strawberry road, track and lightweight touring bicycles since 1971 had sketches of a “new old fashioned” fork crown but lacked the 3d CAD skills that Spencer has honed over the past several years. Houser and Newlands got together over beers and hashed out a double plate fork crown for oval fork blades and are now working on another fork crown utilizing 25.4mm. round fork blades for lightweight touring bicycles. Once the designs are finalized and rapid prototype solid models are printed the CAD files will go to the casting company where the fork crowns will be investment cast. Newlands commented, “It was a pleasure working with Spencer. He is a master machinist and a pro designer in three dimensional surface modeling.” In addition to design services, Houser is co-owner of Speedy Moto Company located in Portland which designs and manufactures aftermarket Ducati motorcycle parts.
The Oregon Bicycle Constructors Association has collaborated with the organizers of the 2012 North American Handmade Bicycle Show to provide two blocks of exhibition space in the Sacramento Convention Center for ten Oregon bicycle manufacturing companies. Eric Estlund, Vice President of the OBCA and owner/builder of Winter Bicycles in Eugene arranged the space at a substantial discount for OBCA members. In addition, the OBCA is funding the cost of electrical power to the two blocks at NAHBS. The Oregon contingent includes Ti Cycles, Ira Ryan, Pereira, DiNucci, MAP, Ahearne, English, Vendetta, Winter, Rolf Prima, and Metrofiets. 2012 NAHBS rotates around the country and is being held in Sacramento, California, March 2-4, www.handmadebicycleshow.com.
